Our adventure to Kongthong, a remote village in Meghalaya, began with a challenging drive through the rugged terrain of the East Khasi Hills. The road, narrow and winding, tested our nerves as it snaked along the mountainside, offering breathtaking views of the valleys below. This practice has been passed down through generations, and despite the encroachment of modern technology, the villagers of Kongthong have preserved their melodic heritage with pride.
As we explored more of the village, the enchanting sounds of the “Jingrwai Iawbei” seemed to echo through the hills, creating a magical atmosphere. It was clear why Kongthong has been recognised globally, even earning a nomination for the UNWTO’s Best Tourism Village award. This tradition, which fosters a strong sense of community, is not just a cultural relic but a living, breathing part of the villagers’ daily lives.
Leaving Kongthong, we carried with us not just memories of the beautiful landscape, but also the hauntingly beautiful melodies that had been shared with us. The visit to this singing village was a profound reminder of how culture and nature can harmonise to create something truly special.
