Surrounded by barren mountains on one side and verdant meadows on the other, Chandrataal is known not only for its breathtaking beauty but also for the rich mythology that surrounds it.

Chandrataal Lake Trek

For many, the journey to Chandrataal is just as memorable as the destination itself. Chandrataal Lake is best accessed from Batal, the closest roadhead, which is about 14 kilometers away. Although it’s possible to drive most of the way during the open season, trekking enthusiasts can embark on an exciting hike to the lake. The trail to Chandrataal offers stunning views of the Himalayan landscape, including meadows dotted with wildflowers, rugged valleys, and panoramic views of glaciers and distant peaks.

For seasoned trekkers, a longer trek begins from Kunzum Pass—one of the highest motorable passes in the world—offering a more strenuous but rewarding experience. This trek takes around 8-10 hours depending on the weather and your pace. As you make your way to the lake, you’ll pass through picturesque campsites and the rugged beauty of Spiti’s desert-like landscape, with endless skies and distant horizons that create a true sense of isolation and serenity.

Once you arrive at the lake, you’ll be greeted by one of the most beautiful sights in the region: crystal-clear waters that reflect the sky and surrounding peaks, with colors that shift between vibrant shades of turquoise, blue, and green depending on the time of day. There’s a deep stillness here, making it a perfect place to meditate, reflect, or simply soak in the raw beauty of the Himalayas.

Chandrataal’s Myths and Legends

As beautiful as Chandrataal is, the mystical aura that surrounds it is what truly sets it apart. Locals speak of ancient legends that add a rich layer of spiritual meaning to the lake, making it a place of pilgrimage for many. Here are some of the most enduring myths and stories tied to Chandrataal. Source: (Roy Tells Tales) ( WanderOn )

Indra and the Moon God

One of the most prominent legends surrounding Chandrataal Lake involves Lord Indra, the king of the gods in Hindu mythology. According to this myth, Indra bathed in the lake to wash away his sins. The lake is also associated with Chandra, the Moon God, who is believed to have bathed here to regain his beauty and coolness. This connection to the gods has made Chandrataal a sacred spot for Hindus, many of whom consider its waters holy and come here to offer prayers.

The Mahabharata Connection

Another ancient legend ties Chandrataal to the epic Mahabharata. It is said that Yudhishthira, the eldest of the five Pandava brothers, was taken to heaven from this very spot by Lord Indra. This mythological link gives Chandrataal a status similar to that of the Ganges, making it a revered site for those familiar with the stories of the Mahabharata. For locals, Chandrataal holds a deep spiritual connection to India’s sacred mythology.

The Mermaid Myth

Local folklore also tells the tale of a mermaid who once lived in the lake. As the story goes, a shepherd who regularly brought his sheep to graze near Chandrataal fell in love with the mermaid. But when she discovered that the shepherd was already married, her heart broke, and she disappeared into the lake forever. According to the legend, she still haunts the lake, revealing herself only to unmarried men who visit the area.

The Love Story of Chandra and Bhagar

Another romantic myth speaks of the love between Chandra, the Moon God’s daughter, and Bhagar, the Sun God’s son. Forbidden by their fathers to be together, the two eloped and planned to meet at Baralacha La. However, they couldn’t meet there and instead joined near the Chandrabhaga River. According to this legend, the couple created Chandrataal (Moon Lake) and Suraj Tal (Sun Lake) as symbols of their eternal love.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Chandrataal Lake is from late June to mid-October, when the roads to the lake are open, and the weather is most favourable for trekking and camping. During this time, the snow melts, revealing lush green meadows around the lake, which are often dotted with wildflowers and make for a stark contrast against the rugged, mountainous backdrop.

It’s worth noting that night temperatures can drop significantly, even in the summer months, so it’s essential to carry warm clothing, especially if you plan to camp near the lake. Most travellers choose to stay in one of the temporary campsites set up during the trekking season, located a short distance from the lake.

Winter visits, while technically possible, are extremely challenging due to heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. The lake is entirely frozen from November through May, and access becomes limited due to road closures and extreme weather conditions.

Camping under the open sky, surrounded by towering mountains, with the serene lake nearby is an unforgettable experience.

2. Stargazing

Chandrataal is situated in a remote part of the Spiti Valley, far from light pollution. As a result, stargazing here is a breathtaking experience. On clear nights, the sky is lit up by thousands of stars, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot the Milky Way. It’s the perfect opportunity for astrophotography enthusiasts or simply those who want to connect with the cosmos.

Travel Tips

The lake, sitting at an impressive altitude of 4,300 meters, can cause altitude sickness for travelers who aren’t well-acclimatized. To avoid this, it’s wise to spend a few days at a lower altitude, such as in Manali or Kaza, allowing your body to adjust before heading to the lake. Additionally, temperatures around Chandrataal can drop significantly, even in the summer, so it’s important to pack warm clothing. Layers, including a down jacket, gloves, and sturdy trekking boots, will keep you comfortable in the chilly nights.

Hydration is another key factor when traveling at high altitudes, as dehydration can contribute to altitude sickness. Be sure to drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel particularly thirsty.

While many adventure seekers trek to Chandrataal from Batal or Kunzum Pass, those short on time or less inclined to hike can drive most of the way from Batal. However, the road is rough, and it’s advisable to use a sturdy 4×4 vehicle for this route. Regardless of how you reach Chandrataal, the journey itself promises to be as rewarding as the destination.
